What do Physical Therapists do?
Orthopedic Physical Therapists will examine patients’ medical histories, test and measure the patients’ strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance and motor function, and determine a patients’ ability to be independent and reintegrate into their normal routine. Next, they will develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient with an orthopedic surgeon that describes the treatment strategy, its purpose, and its anticipated outcome.
In addition to using electrical stimulation, hot packs or cold compresses, and ultrasound to relieve pain and reduce swelling, some physical therapists may use traction or deep-tissue massage to relieve pain. Physical Therapists also teach patients exercises to do at home to expedite their recovery.
